Community Kitchens & Food Banks

No person should go to bed hungry. Together with churches, foundations, and community organisations across Uganda and beyond, we are building a dignified, well-organised network to make sure every person — no matter their situation — has access to safe, nutritious food every day.

What This Programme Is About

Hunger is not just about food — it is about dignity. In Uganda, as in many parts of the world, many families, elderly people, children, and individuals living with disability cannot always access the basic nutrition their bodies need. This is not because food does not exist — it is because the systems to get it to the right people have not been properly built.

The Humanitarian Projects Bank, through its Community Kitchens and Food Banks Programme, is working to fix that. We are building a proper, well-managed humanitarian network that links together churches, foundations, NGOs, and community organisations — giving them the technical support, resources, and oversight they need to serve their communities well.

This is not a hand-out scheme. It is a structured, international cooperation model built on transparency, training, and community participation. Every shilling is accounted for. Every meal is tracked. Every beneficiary is registered. And every organisation that joins must meet clear standards of accountability and service.

We are not here to do things the way they have always been done — we are here to do things properly.

Our Five Strategic Pillars

Pillar 1

Building Strong Alliances

We bring together churches, foundations, NGOs, and community organisations who already have roots in their communities. No single organisation can do this alone — but together, we can reach everyone.

Pillar 2

Community Kitchens

We set up properly managed spaces where vulnerable people can receive hot, nutritious, hygienically prepared meals. These are not charity hand-outs — they are dignified community services run to professional standards.

Pillar 3

Food Banks

We create urban and rural food banks that recover good food, store it properly, and distribute it to communities that need it — reducing waste and making sure nothing that can nourish someone goes to waste.

Pillar 4

Transparency & Financial Control

Every resource — food, money, equipment — is tracked, audited, and reported. We use internal and external audits, independent evaluation, and digital monitoring systems so that trust is never compromised.

Pillar 5

Ongoing Training

We invest in the people running these programmes. Teams and volunteers receive continuous training in food handling, financial management, community outreach, health regulations, and institutional accountability.

🍲

Community Kitchens

Community kitchens are spaces designed to give dignified, safe, and nutritious food to people going through social vulnerability, extreme poverty, abandonment, or food insecurity. These include the elderly, children, people with disabilities, the homeless, and others who cannot always fend for themselves.

Our kitchens operate to proper hygiene and nutritional standards — not just "something to eat," but food that actually nourishes the people receiving it.

  • Food provided meets adequate hygiene and nutritional standards
  • All food handlers receive proper training
  • Ongoing health supervision of facilities and food safety
  • Resources are used transparently and controlled at all times
  • Every beneficiary is registered and their meals tracked
  • Local communities actively participate in running the kitchens

* These kitchens are community service spaces — they must never be turned into private businesses or used for personal gain.

🏪

Food Banks

Food banks recover food that is still good for eating, store it under the right conditions, and distribute it responsibly to communities in need. They operate at both the urban and rural levels — meeting communities where they actually are.

In Uganda, too much food goes to waste while people go hungry nearby. Food banks are the organised link between surplus and need.

  • Proper storage systems that keep food safe and usable
  • Full inventory control and traceability from source to recipient
  • Cold chain systems for perishable items like meat, dairy, and produce
  • Careful records of all food received and distributed
  • Logistical oversight of transport and delivery
  • Transparent distribution systems — no favouritism, no leakage

* Strict health standards are non-negotiable. The health of beneficiaries comes first, always.

What Is Required to Participate

Joining this programme is not automatic. We evaluate every application carefully because the people we serve deserve organisations that are genuinely ready to serve them well. Here is what participating organisations must have in place:

Current legal registration and up-to-date tax documentation

A minimum track record of experience in social or community work

Demonstrated operational and administrative capacity

Financial statements and functioning accounting mechanisms

Written anti-corruption policies and safeguarding of vulnerable persons

No conflicts of interest between leadership and programme beneficiaries

How We Keep Things Honest

Transparency is not just a word for us — it is the foundation the whole programme stands on. These are the control and accountability mechanisms that every participating organisation is subject to:

Internal & External Audits

Financial audits are carried out both internally and by independent external auditors on a regular basis.

Periodic Technical Reviews

Programme performance is evaluated technically to make sure services are meeting the right standards.

On-Site Supervision

Physical visits to kitchens and food banks to verify that what is reported is what is actually happening.

Independent Evaluation Committees

Independent bodies with no stake in the programmes carry out evaluations so there is no conflict of interest.

Full Food Traceability

Every item of food is tracked from its origin through transport, storage, and final distribution to beneficiaries.

Budget Control Systems

All spending must be backed by proper invoices, receipts, and accounting records — no exceptions.

Beneficiary Data Protection

The personal information of people we serve is protected and used only for legitimate programme purposes.

ERP Accounting Software

Each programme is assigned digital accounting, inventory, and reporting software for real-time monitoring.
